GHS-Monterey game story; complete results/schedule
The Gilroy High boys’ basketball team outplayed and outscored Monterey during an impressive third quarter in its Bob Hagen Tournament opener Thursday night.

Turns out the turnaround came a bit too late for the Mustangs.

Gilroy took a 1-0 lead, but never led again in a 49-36 home loss to the tough and athletic Toreadors.

Early on at least, the ‘Stangs were beaten bad on the boards and seemed to lack confidence with their shot. Gilroy didn’t make a basket for the first four minutes of the game, scored just 13 in the first half and trailed by 11 at the break.

“I thought we went in apprehensive and we didn’t get the 110 percent I’ve come to automatically expect,” GHS head coach Bud Ogden said. “We’re just not a very confident team right now.

“It took awhile to realize we could play with these guys.”

When they did, it became a game again. Sparked by reserve center Dominic Jackson, Gilroy trimmed a lead that had ballooned to 16 to just eight by the end of the third quarter.

The junior entered the game midway through the quarter and scored five points and hauled in six rebounds.

“Dominic came in with reckless abandon,” Ogden said. “He came in with confidence … and you could tell.”

To start the fourth quarter, though, the Mustangs (5-5) turned it over on their first four possessions and Monterey pulled away by scoring the first eight points to increase the lead back to 16.

The Toreadors (8-1), who play Harbor in tonight’s winners’ bracket, were led by senior forward Kenny Hills with 14 points. Guard Mike Phillips and forward Nick Struthers also added 10 apiece.

The Monterey defense was also solid, forcing 23 Gilroy turnovers.

“Way too many turnovers,” Ogden said with a heavy sigh. “That lack of confidence converts into turnovers.”

Junior center Ryan Chisolm (14 pts) and senior guard Calvin Kretz (10 pts) paced the Mustangs, who next face Alvarez at 5pm today.
