CHEERS: To all the responsible citizens who voted and particularly to those who voted for Measure I, the Gilroy school bond. In difficult economic times, it’s not easy to say “yes” to yet another tax. But Gilroyans generously did, voting to upgrade older schools and finance a plan that will build new schools as necessary for our community for two decades. Improved school facilities is a key component to a better Gilroy. Now let’s keep all those school projects under budget.
CHEERS: For Jeff Garcia. Gilroy’s favorite son took it to another level Sunday while leading the 49ers to what he called his most satisfying win as a professional over the Oakland Raiders. Garcia personally willed this victory, clawing for first downs on inspired QB scrambles and casting aside the agony of possible defeat after the 49ers missed a slam-dunk field goal in the final seconds of regulation play. His guts and determination are the stuff legendary NFL quarterbacks are made of. Great win, Jeff. Gilroy is proud.
CHEERS: The Adult Forum Sex Club has left Gilroy. Good riddance. Say what you will about tolerance, and personal choice, but take this acid test: Would you be willing to have it operate downtown or next door? Don’t forget, “not in my backyard” means it’s in someone else’s backyard.
JEERS: For the State Library Commission which is taking an excruciatingly long time to award grants for library construction. Bureaucratic meandering seem to have led us to this: it’s a good idea for Gilroyans to write Dr. Kevin Starr, State Librarian of California, Office of Library Construction, 1029 J St., Suite 400, Sacramento, CA 95814-2825 and let him know this community desperately needs and deserves a new library.
