A preliminary hearing involving a former Gilroy City Councilman charged with stealing more than $9,000 from a private Memorial Day Parade fund was delayed more than a month Friday after his attorney asked for additional time to review evidence, according to the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office.
Craig Gartman was charged May 27 with felony grand theft for allegedly siphoning off money while acting as the parade’s co-chairman from 2002-2008, according to court documents.
Gartman had sole possession of the group’s checkbook, according to court documents. The district attorney’s office began its investigation into the suspected theft more than two years ago.
Kirk Elliott, Gartman’s attorney, has said thousands of pages of documents related to the case would be reviewed.
Gartman pleaded not guilty June 21. He self-surrendered to authorities June 2 and was released after posting $10,000 bail.
Friday’s hearing was delayed until 1:30 p.m. on Sept. 27, Chase said.
