Tuesday’s game between CHS and GHS was definitely one for the books. In the six years that the two teams have played each other, Christopher earned its very first victory against Gilroy in soccer.
That goes for both the boys and girls teams.
“It’s a big win for us,” Ricardo Espinosa said. “The boys dominated most of the game, they were composed and mature. I knew this would be the team to earn the first win. I’m very proud of them.”
Within the first 10 minutes of the game, Christopher senior Jonathan Rojas charged down the field to score the first and only goal of the game.
The Cougars didn’t let their guard down as Tiago Costa sped past the Mustangs, however Gilroy’s Ellis Diaz stole the ball from under him.
Diaz passed the ball to Carlos Guererro, who attempted a goal but was blocked by Christopher’s goalie, Carlos Arroyo.
“My boys went out there and played hard and stayed focus during the whole game. Now we know what to expect when we play Christopher again at their home,” said Gilroy’s Coach Armando Padilla.
With 13 minutes left in the game, Arroyo fired back at the Mustangs by leaping across the goal to keep the score at 1-0.
“Christopher has a group of talented seniors that have been together for the last four years that have great chemistry out on the field,” Padilla said.
In the course of the whole game Rojas made three other attempts on goal.
When asked about how he felt about scoring the winning goal he said, “It was monumental for me. I feel that our team started a legacy, and I feel like my goal was the start of a new beginning for the CHS soccer program.”
