Pea-sized hail pelted parts of Gilroy Tuesday afternoon as a late season storm rolled across the region.

“It’s not really super strong,” said National Weather Service Forecaster Diana Henderson. “But there’s enough cold air that it’s creating bits of hail.”

Even though temperatures hovered around the mid 50s Tuesday, “the freezing level is low enough that the water is still frozen when it reaches the ground,” Henderson said.

NWS received widespread reports of pea-sized and smaller hail from Sonoma to Monterey, Henderson said. Locals should expect showers and bits of hail through Tuesday evening, she said. The gloomy conditions should begin to wane overnight with a few residual showers lasting into Wednesday. Temperatures will stay in the 50s and 60s until the end of the week, according to the NWS.

Partly sunny skies will usher in the rest of the week and forecasters expect sunny skies over the weekend with highs in the low 70s and overnight lows in the low 40s.
