Dear Editor,

Whoeeeeeeee!

I thought Gilroy Unified School District’s “leadership”, its Board of Untrustables and those heading up the diluted-to-nothingness Measure I Citizens Oversight Committee were skilled at putting down a shuck-and-jive.

Now comes Congressman Mike Honda who, speaking on the proposed plan between the Amah Mutsun Tribal Band (all 454 bodies) and Sargent Ranch owner Wayne Pierce to develop the ranch, double-talked this convoluted shuck-and-jive: “The development is not part of my concern. I support (tribal) sovereignty. Anyone who understands tribal history knows that when folks go through the process of federal recognition, sovereignty would be granted on that condition and then they could go about seeking tribal land. And that’s what I’m interested in.”

You can’t have it that way, Mr. Honda.

You may sit astride the noble steed

Sovereignty but, moving it forward, you’re also advancing the garbage bags call development affixed to its tail.

The result, if you attain tribal sovereignty for the 454, development will happen with total legal indifference to city, county and/or state land use or planning requirements/regulations.

Is that what you want, Mr. Honda?

The views of South Valley leaders apparently have little concern to you at this time. Since you’re entrenched in a safe democratic district that assures your re-election, you’re much too busy seeking a “much-needed change” in the presidency to take time now – when discussion/action is needed, to assume responsibility on this issue.

Do you think by simply saying, “I oppose development of that land. So (the 454 and Wayne Pierce) are aware of that,” there’ll be a sudden 454-Pierce revelation and, hallelujah, the land will not be developed?

Do you handle all matters within your office in similar unawareness, Mr. Honda?

James Brescoll, Gilroy
