Dozens of civic leaders and residents turned out Thursday
morning to honor Cesar Chavez, a revolutionary advocate for
California farmworkers. The breakfast ceremony, held at Harvest
Time restaurant in downtown Gilroy, included a keynote speech by
the deceased leader’s sister, Rita Chavez Medina (second from
right). Also pictured with Medina, from left to right, are newly
elected school board member Javier Aguirre; Mayor Al Pinheiro;
Olivia Soza-Mendiola, head of the Mexican American Community
Services Agency; and Noemi Garcia Reyes, the principal of El Portal
Leadership Academy Charter High School. Funds raised at the
breakfast will support MACSA’s student scholarship program and the
leadership academy. It is the first time MACSA, based in San Jose,
has held a fundraiser in Gilroy.
