Gilroyans already know the Black Bear Diner is a local landmark but Hollywood recently discovered the restaurant, featuring it in a new movie called “First Dog.”

The film is about a boy who, after finding a dog he’s convinced belongs to the United States president, embarks on a cross-country adventure to Washington D.C. to return it.

The crew spent Monday filming the movie at Black Bear, a stop on the fictional trip to D.C.

“It just fell upon us,” said Black Bear Manager Mike Gray. “People are coming in excited, wanting to know what’s going on.”

One side of the restaurant was closed down for filming but the diner remained open, he said. Oddly enough, the dog’s name is Little Bear, Gray said.

The crew has spent the last two weeks filming the independent film at various locations throughout Morgan Hill, including he historic Votaw House at 395 W. Main Ave. The bulk of the movie will be filmed in Morgan Hill, said Director Bryan Michael Stoller.

Stars including Dan Aykroyd, Dolly Parton and Eric Roberts will appear in the film made in conjunction with First American Cinema and the Sobrato Conservatory of the Arts. Stoller said about 50 Ann Sobrato High School film students, parents and teachers are involved in the movie’s production, from acting to staging.
