Gilroy High’s junior varsity football team came up with a big win at last week’s Homecoming game, defeating Alisal High School 23-20. Dante Fullard had a 2-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Josh Gonzalez had a 25-yard TD run in the second quarter and Sean Hale had a 25-yard run touchdown in the third quarter. Jeff Smith played well, as he added to the scoring with a 30-yard field goal in the third quarter along with 10 tackles and an interception in the third quarter.
“We have had a good week of practice and the boys have worked hard,” said coach Jack Daley, looking ahead to a meeting with Palma.
The freshman football team also had a good showing against Alisal, snapping a four-game losing streak with a 33-0 win. Bryan Sanchez played well as he scored three touchdowns. Taylor Alonzo had a touchdown in the first quarter and Jonathan Owens had a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Niko Sandoval had an interception in the third quarter.
The girls field hockey team had mixed results, shutting out Santa Catalina 4-0 Wednesday before falling 6-0 to Archbishop Mitty the following day. Junior Deena Morsilli scored the first goal against the Cougars, followed by Danielle Zappa. Alex Cabrera scored the final two goals. Sophomore Marissa McBride had two assists, setting up Zappa on the second goal and Cabrera on the third goal.
“We have worked hard,” said coach Armando Padilla.
The cross country JV boys lost 15-42 last week in a meet against Palma. Junior Steven Heisey came in third with a time of 19:38. Tyler West came in eighth running 20:43, and behind him was Brandon West placing ninth with a time of 22:02.
The cross country JV girls lost to Notre Dame as well due to a lack of runners. Mariah Salazar placed first with a time of 23:50, improving from her last time of 24:27. Hannah Fiorio came in second with a time of 24:08, improving as well from her last time of 24:58, and Carly Apuzzo came in fourth with a time of 25:33.
“We didn’t have a complete team,” said coach Art Silva. “The outcome would have been different if we had one more girl.”
The frosh/soph team competed against Palma. Daniel Apuzzo came in fourth improving his time from 19:11 to 18:53. Patrick Collins’ time remained the same when he came in sixth at19:51, and William Condon placed seventh with a time of 19:55.
Gilroy’s junior varsity volleyball team dropped a 25-18, 25-15 decision Tuesday to Notre Dame.
The freshman volleyball team also came up short against the Spirits, losing 25-2, 25-7.
“Anna Collins made 5, 6 serves in a row,” said coach Antoinette Bowe. “Notre Dame was good. They were really intimidating.”
