Kathryn McTigue passed away in Hollister, CA on May 28, 2014.
She was born Kathryn Antoinette Mackovets in Pocahontas, IA, the third child of Kathryn and Anton Mackovets. She attended and graduated from Sacred Heart grade and high schools, and the American Institute of Business in Des Moines, where she joined the work force of Globe Loan Co. as a secretary.
At the outbreak of World War II, she returned to Pocahontas and was employed as a legal secretary for the county attorney until he was taken into the FBI. From that time and through the remaining war years, she was employed by the U.S. government in the office of Price Administration.
In 1945 she married Lt. J.G. McTigue and they made their home in St. Louis, MO, until he was discharged from the service.
They moved to Emmetsburg, IA for a short time and then to Pocahontas, where he joined Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Co.
In 1957, they settled in Fort Dodge, where Mr. McTigue made a life-long career with Northwestern Mutual and served as District Manager until his death in 1986.
While living in Fort Dodge, Kathryn volunteered her services in many organizations. She and a good friend were with original “courtesy cart pushers” at Trinity Regional Hospital, which was well-stocked with any and all necessities for a hospital patient, read cards and letters to them, handled their mail, etc. She volunteered her services at Catholic Charities, and was active in Corpus Christi Altar Society, decorating the church at Christmas, and checked out many, many books for students at St. Edmond High School.
The Jerry McTigue Family received the Spirit of St. Edmond Family Award for their outstanding service, dedication and commitment to their community, church and school.
Kathryn moved to Hollister in 1988 and made her home at Ridgemark Golf and Country Club where she joined the Niner’s Golfing Group. For 10 years she served as a volunteer for Hospice until the local office closed here. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, the Tres Pinos Altar Society and a Eucharistic Minister.
She enjoyed the American Musical Theater, the San Jose Repertory and the San Jose Symphony, all of which she attended regularly. She loved to travel and made many trips to Europe with local friends and the Northwestern Mutual group.
Her greatest joy was time spent with what she referred to as the greatest family one could possibly have. For 28 years, they never failed to gather together at Christmas at various vacation spots.
Kathryn was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, sisters Harriet Marie Mackovets and Helen Alderman, brother William Mackovets of Pocahontas, IA, Joyce Milder of Chicago, IL, Janette Murray of Minneapolis, MN, and Patrick McTigue and wife Arlene of San Rafael, CA.
She is survived by her daughter, Kay Filice, grandchildren Tony, Patrick and Marjorie, and Christopher and Kristin Filice, son Tom McTigue, grandchildren Liam, Kaya, and Brock McTigue, son John McTigue and wife Vanessa, grandchildren Kearney, Riley, and Cullen McTigue, son Patrick McTigue and wife Lori, grandchildren Connor, Ryan, and Kaitlyn McTigue, brothers-in-law Clem Milder of Chicago, IL, and John Murray of Minneapolis, MN.
