Two Gilroy mistakes gave Notre Dame two goals when the teams battled at Cal State-Monterey Bay Thursday.
But the Mustangs did enough work to make it not matter in the end.
Gilroy scored three goals in the first half and one in the second to emerge with a 4-2 victory over the Spirits. Nubia Diaz de Leon led the Mustangs with two goals, one on a penalty kick. Joann Olivo and Jeannette Figueroa also netted goals.
The Mustangs now sit at 3-4-2 overall and 2-0 in the Tri-County Athletic League.
Some costly first-half mistakes made the game closer than it should have been, though Gilroy still entered halftime with a 3-2 lead.
“We made mistakes we shouldn’t have made so a lot of it had to do with our level of play,” said Gilroy head coach Jose Hernandez. “At the half, we weren’t happy with our energy level. We weren’t happy with our aggressiveness or style of play.”
But in the second half, Gilroy made adjustments and took control of the game. The ‘Stangs scored one more goal while shutting out the Spirits.
Hernandez is optimistic that his team will continue to improve now that winter break is over and all his players are back to playing full-time.
“Christmas set us back a little bit. So this has been the first week, after trips and everything, that the entire team has been here,” Hernandez said. “It’s nice to have everyone back.”
