Gilroy gave powerhouse St. Francis a run Thursday night but came up short 63-56.

St. Francis, who improved to 9-0 on the season, got hot against Gilroy’s zone. The Mustangs (6-5) took a 6-2 lead to open the game, but the Lancers took over from there, leading 23-13 after the first and 36-27 at the half.

Despite only nine players available and a couple players battling the flu, the Mustangs made it close. Gilroy got within one point in the third quarter and three toward the end of the fourth.

Derek Jensen was one of those players battling sickness, but he still led the team with 20 points, 7 assists and 7 rebounds.

Kendrick Azcueta had 12 points, and Lorenzo Dobson had 11, including a massive dunk in the third quarter.

Stephen Galtman had six points, Tyler Hartman had four, Justin Wheet had two and Elijah Harrell added 1.
