Saturday to cap a busy weekend.
Led by one head coach and his staff, the Gilroy High and Christopher High track and field teams opened up the 2010 season with a non-league exhibition meet on Friday with local schools Live Oak and Sobrato, then participated in the Willow Glen Invite on Saturday to cap a busy weekend.
Head coach Jeff Myers, has coined this season’s endeavor as the “Fellowship of Track.”
“(It) is what I came up with based on the fact that we have two high school teams enjoying the training and competition of the sport track and field at one location,” Myers wrote via e-mail.
Christopher’s Martin Ettema was victorious in the frosh-soph 300 hurdles on Saturday, setting a school-record time of 46.20 seconds in the process. Claudia Ferreira set a girls’ record in the same event, posting a time of 54.90.
On the Gilroy High side, the Mustangs collected 22 medals at the Willow Glen Invite. The varsity girls took first as a team, led by Sarah Una Dia, Lindsey Foster, Tianna Huddleston, Angeline Kimbo and Brandie Rodriguez.
Una Dia won both the 100-meter hurdles and high jump for two of her four medals. With a jump of 16-feet, 5.75 inches, Foster secured the top spot in the long jump.
Juan Velasquez finished in second in the 800-meter and Julius Travis raced to a fourth-place medal in the 100-meter with a time of 11.43 seconds.
“Overall I am satisfied with all the athletes from both Gilroy and Christopher for their efforts in the first two days of competition,” Myers wrote. “We definitely need to clean up a few things across the board.”
The Mustangs will be without their usual anchor of the 4X100 relay team as Jordan Soares went down with an injury on Saturday, Meyers said. Ronnie Short will fill the void left by Soares, joining David Guenther, Romeo Travis and Julius Travis.
The Cougars and Mustangs will face Alvarez in a tri-meet Thursday at GHS. It will be the first Tri-County Athletic League meet of the season for the Mustangs. The Cougars, who have just a frosh-soph team, will go up against the other JV teams.
