Lee Ends Successful Season
Gilroy junior Arthur Lee lost his first two matches in the double-elimination Central Coast Section boys singles badminton tournament Tuesday.
In his first match, he lost 15-3, 15-7 to Bryant Luong of Fremont and in the second he lost 15-10, 15-10 to Evan Fredericksen of Menlo Atherton.
Lee, the Blossom Valley Athletic League champion, was the first participant in five years from Gilroy to make CCS. He finished the regular season at 13-3 and went 6-1 in the league tournament.
“It is a very significant accomplishment,” said coach Wayne Scott. “Now he has a good idea of what it will take to get there again. He knew the competition would be good, but I don’t think think he knew they would be this good.”
Stevenson Eliminates LO
Stevenson scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to end Live Oak’s season with a 2-0 defeat in Tuesday night’s Central Coast Section Division III semifinals softball game.
After a lead-off walk, the Pirates followed with three hits to plate the winning runs. Stevenson senior Caroline Main struck out 11 hitters and held the Acorns to three hits.
Live Oak came close to taking a lead in the fourth inning when senior Taylor Sutton was thrown out at the plate while trying to stretch a triple into a home run off a ball she hit into the left field corner.
Senior Tricia Goularte, who led the Acorns with 13 wins this season, gave up five hits and struck out five.
Stevenson moves to play Notre Dame-Belmont in the Central Coast Section finals Saturday.
The Tigers scored four runs in the first against Notre Dame-Salinas, which had won the past nine CCS Division III titles and 10 of the past 11, and that lead help up to end the Spirits reign.
