Dear Editor,

I read the article in today’s paper with a combination of amazement and disbelief.

Why does it take a $100,000 study to see that Welburn Avenue is basically a residential street which has been turned into a quasi-arterial because it’s the only street besides First Street that takes people across town in an east/west direction and ends at or near the freeway, Monterey Street and the outlets?

It’s already loaded with stop signs, but people keep using it, don’t they? The answer seems fairly obvious – find another street that can be altered to allow east/west traffic or find a way to widen First Street. There are the numbered streets, of course, and a lot of people use them, too. No wonder that the residents of Welburn are upset. I’m sure that if any of the councilmen who think the residents are over-reacting actually lived on or near Welburn, they would soon change their minds.

Putting a traffic barrier at LaCache Way will only cause people to veer onto other side streets on their way to downtown; the outlets or the freeway. Good luck with this one.
