Dear Editor,

My name is Art Hunsdorfer. I am an employee of the Salinas Union High School District and from 1991 to 2010; I served as the Athletic Director at Salinas High School. I am writing to lend my support of Mr. Jack Daley.

Jack is a dedicated athletic director that spends an enormous amount of time administering the athletic program at Gilroy High School. I know of no other athletic director in our league or in our area that dedicates more time to his/her job than Jack. He is also called upon to administer countless Central Coast Section playoff events not only because Gilroy High School has some of the best athletic facilities in the Central Coast Section, but because Jack can be counted on to run those events in a professional and responsible manner. Jack has always been an exceptional athletic director who is respected by many coaches in our area. His calm demeanor is appreciated by many and he always deals with issues that arise in his athletic program.

In my time as an athletic director, I have had the pleasure of working with Sal Tomasello and Jack Daley, both from Gilroy High School and both two of the best Athletic Directors to ever grace our local campuses. When a school loses an effective athletic director, it is extremely difficult to find anyone that will do the job that the previous athletic director did due to several reasons. There are not too many people that are crazy enough to put in the kind of time needed to run an athletic program, and there are not too many people that understand the “pulse” of the school to effectively administer an athletic program.

After losing Sal Tomasello, finding someone as great as Jack Daley is not something that the GUSD should take lightly. Jack will be incredibly hard to replace. My bet is that it will be difficult to be as lucky as the GUSD was the last time they had to find someone to replace an athletic director at Gilroy High School. Remember that there are a lot of people that think they can be an athletic director, but there are very few that can actually effectively perform the job.

I realize there are two sides to every story and I only know the basics of this situation. The way I see it, Jack is guilty of two things … hiring a bad coach and instilling the utmost trust in a coach. There is not one athletic director that can say that he/she has not hired bad coaches. I have hired some terrible coaches and all one can do is get rid of such coaches and move on. Trusting your coaches is essential to being an effective athletic director. Talk to any coach at a school that has an effective athletic director and he/she will tell you that their athletic director trusts them and gives them the tools they need to build their program. Jack does this. I have personally talked to several coaches at Gilroy High School and they have told me that Jack has all of the qualities needed to be a great athletic director.

Finally, I would respectfully like to offer my support for Jack Daley’s reinstatement as the athletic director at Gilroy High School. Jack is a fantastic man that is dedicated to Gilroy High School. His dedication to the students of Gilroy High School, his professional approach in dealing with the Gilroy community, and his dedication to the athletic program at Gilroy High School is matched by no other athletic director. I hope you will look at this situation and realize that Jack is the best person for Gilroy High School athletics.
