DEAR EDITOR:

I’m not sure why my letter to the editor published March 4 struck such a personal nerve with Ryan Chisolm. I’m happy to hear that his freshman team did so well, but my letter wasn’t about him or his team. I only mentioned the struggles of GHS basketball because it was well documented in the paper.

Obviously, I was talking about the varsity team. Contrary to Chisolm’s claim that I never attended any games at GHS, I went to many home games, as my sister is a senior and has a lot of friends on the varsity team. I saw for myself how well the JV and freshman teams were doing. But again, their story was not all over the sports page, which I read every day and neither was Brownell’s.

That was my original reason for writing the letter. The information I included regarding the history of Brownell’s team was given to me by two longtime Brownell coaches. According to Coach Jeff Ross and Coach Ron Ayala, this was the first time Brownell has taken the East County Championship. They had taken the league before and taken county when combined with South Valley, but on their own, this was a first.

And finally, I wrote the letter to thank my coaches and to acknowledge a great season that went unnoticed in the paper. The letter was not about me. I never referred to myself as a player, only as part of a team. At 5 feet tall, I don’t think a basketball career is in my future, but either way, I hope all three teams have a great season next year. Go Mustangs!
