Dear Editor,
My daughter Jessica Shingu is a part of the Gilroy High School Concerto Delle Donne choir. They went on a southern California trip to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Occidental University and Azusa Pacific to perform. I felt compelled to write because of what took place there.
The girls finished the workshop at Occidental University and were on their way to the bus. Some decided to check out the campus chapel which was surrounded by beautiful stained glass windows. The atmosphere in that chapel was indescribable and some of the girls began to sing (this was not pre-planned at all). Soon other girls joined in and formed a circle. Mr. Robb walked in followed by several other girls who heard the singing from outside. It was a moment I will cherish forever. It brought me to tears.
After the song (Invocation) was finished, not one teary-eyed girl spoke a word. We quietly walked back to the tour bus and everyone took their seat. As we drove away in silence, Mr. Robb got on the mic and said; “It’s moments like this that create memories that will be etched in your heart forever.” I couldn’t agree more!
My family has been involved in chorus for over 40 years, and I’ve never experienced a choir director like Mr. Robb and I’m convinced I never will. His passion for the work he does with the students is evident in the way they perform. I’m sure he could retire now, but I believe it’s his passion for music and his determination to share it with his students that allows him to make the personal sacrifices it must take to produce the superior qualities GHS choirs have. The mold was broken after he was made! Thank you Mr. Robb, you ARE the man!!
