Dear Editor,
As I am sitting here at my desk on my last day as the police
chief, I am remembering back to 34 years ago when I began my career
with the Gilroy Police Department. As I reflect upon the past years
I realize how fortunate I have been to have been given the
opportunity to grow with the city. I think about all the people I
have met and worked with over these many years. Mostly, I think
about how they have influenced and touched me.
Dear Editor,

As I am sitting here at my desk on my last day as the police chief, I am remembering back to 34 years ago when I began my career with the Gilroy Police Department. As I reflect upon the past years I realize how fortunate I have been to have been given the opportunity to grow with the city. I think about all the people I have met and worked with over these many years. Mostly, I think about how they have influenced and touched me.

So, I write this letter to publicly show may appreciation to a few of those who have had the greatest impact on my life.

Thank you to the dedicated and professional men and woman who work for or have worked for the Gilroy Police Department. The work you do, 24 hours a day, day in and day out, often goes unnoticed and unrecognized by the people we serve. Your efforts allow people to feel safe in their homes, your efforts help those in distress, and you give of yourselves everyday for the people of Gilroy. I notice and appreciate your hard work.

Thank you to the other members of the city staff. You keep the community moving ahead. You are what makes Gilroy go. Without the efforts of all of you – from accountants to recreation coordinators – the city would stop functioning. It has been a pleasure to have worked with so many committed individuals.

Thank you to the City Council members who have so strongly supported the efforts of police department through the years. Without their support, Gilroy would not be the great community it is today.

Thank you to the citizens of Gilroy who have also been so supportive of the department. The involvement of so many of you, whether giving me advice, feedback and, at times, criticism, has held me and, more importantly, the whole department, to a high standard.

I especially want to thank the department heads, past and present, the city administrator and my administrative staff who have done so much for me. They picked me up when I fell, they watched out for me and they taught me many valuable lessons. Gilroy is truly blessed to have such outstanding people managing the city.

Lastly, thank you to my family who put up with the phone calls at all hours, the late night call-outs and the pressures that the families of all police officers feel. They have stood by me through the highs and lows of my career.

I am honored to have been given the opportunity to serve the citizens of Gilroy and work with the exceptional people in the city. As I transition from chief of police to citizen of Gilroy I am confident that we are in good hands.
