Huge Sums, More Dead American Soldiers and a Selective Service Nightmare

Dear Editor,

I’m writing to express my deepest disgust for the upcoming “readiness exercises” to be put into effect by the Selective Service.

The fact that this system, which completely ignores personal freedom, is even being tested is even further proof that our opinions as Americans really don’t matter to the government. The war is causing more and more troops (some I personally know) to have to be sent overseas to die in a war that is costing us more than we know.

As I write this, more than 3,000 U.S. troops have died. More troops getting sent over, with no exit strategy in sight means nothing more than more dead solders. Instating a draft (which is the obvious next step after testing the systems), might as well be the Selective Services’ way of telling you “We’re taking away your freedom to preserve freedom.”

I’m no math wiz, but I seem to remember subtracting from something doesn’t keep the end result equal, it lowers it! Taking freedoms from certain citizens means less for all. The fact that the SS (pun intended) is being tested at all is a huge financial joke as well. Taxes will most defiantly be raised just to run the program because, according to SS Director of Operations Scott Campbell, there isn’t enough money in the budget for it! So more taxes (legalized slavery) , loss of freedom and more pointless death with no plan to stop.

Forgive me for sounding like a preacher of the End Times, but this is all on the horizon! The real enemy to your freedom doesn’t lie in a desert somewhere. The enemy is right in your back yard. Will you fight back?

‘Unhappy’ Republicans Hypocrites Who ‘Like War, But Hate Abortion …’

Dear Editor,

Reading a recent Dispatch, I got the feeling James Brescoll does not like my letters to the editor. James Fennell and Cynthia Walker – not to mention Mark Zappa – all are Republicans and bitter from the last elections, but are they real Gilroyans?

Mr. Brescoll is just another unhappy Republican using the same smear tactics and false statements that I have heard for years.

Let me remind everyone, I was born and raised in Gilroy, I’m not going anywhere and I have been in this small community all my life. I vote liberal independent, libertarian and of course Democrat. That’s what you don’t like about me, my politics.

I’m proud to be a liberal. I think everybody should be one. To be Republican means you like war, but hate abortion, you like money, but worship God. How can these people worship two masters, business and money, power and Jesus Christ?

Does this look and sound like hypocrisy? It is. Do you like hypocrites? It is easy to say you miss the point when some people don’t agree with you.

I’m sorry Mr. Brescoll about the election. Better luck next time.

Daniel Garcia, Gilroy
