DEAR EDITOR:

Mr. Whittaker makes some good points with his letter “Legalizing gay marriage would be just the beginning.”

I would tend to agree with him that established rights and laws are based on morals. Or at least ethics.

However, in defending morals and putting down tolerance, Mr. Whittaker sets up a straw horse. Same sex marriage is not “any form of marriage.” We are not talking about multiple partners, relatives, children, animals, or rocks. We are talking about two consenting adults. Stop trying to fog the issue with nonsense.

Marriage and the family system are the foundation of our entire society? Well, they are very important, but somehow I’ve missed seeing that statement in our Constitution.

What I do see is “the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness,” and equal rights under the law. If Mr. Whittaker believes that marriage always has been between one man and one woman, apparently he’s never heard of Utah.
