Why is it your favorite book?: “It has a true historic basis, and it takes you through a lot of things that actually happened. I like to know about history. I read a lot about what happened in the past, because it relates to what’s happening now, and there’s a lot of lessons to be learned. Plus, it was well-written. Herman Wouk has got a way of telling stories that keeps you interested.”

When and why did you read it?: “I read it probably in the early ’80s. It was actually made into a mini-series and that, of course, brought attention to it. If something gets made into a mini-series, I like to read it first. I’ve read it two or three times because it’s that interesting to me. It’s one of those things that you pick more stuff out of it every time you read it.”

How do you use reading and writing every day?: “I have hundreds of e-mails and there’s always things coming out from the state and the feds and there’s new laws. We’re reading and writing all the time. It’s the basis of the communication that happens … so it’s an important thing. And I use it for pleasure. If I haven’t got a new book to read, I’ll go get an old book to read. I’ve got to be reading something all the time.”
