City Council donates to hurricane relief efforts
Gilroy – City council voted Monday to send $23,835.50 to the American Red Cross to assist hurricane victims.
Councilmen Bob Dillon and Craig Gartman voted against the measure, which passed 4-2, arguing that local officials should not dip into city coffers when Gilroyans already have a proven record of generosity. They pointed out that the city will hold a Live Aid benefit concert Oct. 22 to support the Red Cross.
The City Council donation is part of a county-wide effort to donate 50 cents per resident to the Red Cross for hurricane relief.
