Gilroy man injured after hitting pole

Gilroy – A 42-year-old Gilroy man was taken by helicopter to Regional Medical Center in San Jose after a solo-vehicle accident Sunday. Morgan Hill Police Cmdr. Joe Sampson said the driver, Roman Salvador, 40, also of Gilroy, was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs. “It looks as if he simply lost control of the vehicle,” Sampson said Monday. The accident occurred about 11:41am on Monterey Road just north of Cochrane Avenue. The car slammed into a power pole on the southbound side of Monterey. The pole was damaged, and PG&E responded, installing another pole to brace the damaged pole.

Reuben Galvan suffered serious injuries in the accident, Sampson said.

Reserve deputy saves a life

San Martin – A longtime reserve officer with the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office probably saved the life of an elderly male Jan. 2 at the south county substation in San Martin.

Reserve Deputy Duke Merino was at the substation when the man arrived, seeking medical assistance, about 12:20am. The man was suffering chest pains and attempting to drive himself to the hospital when he began to feel worse. He remembered seeing signs for the substation and assumed someone there would be able to help him. Unfortunately, the station was closed, and there were no other emergency personnel in the area.

Luckily for the elderly male, Merino was working on paperwork at the substation. He called for paramedics, and while waiting for them to arrive, he gave what assistance he could to the man.

Later, it was discovered the man was having a heart attack and could have died had not Merino been there to help him.

“He is such a dedicated reserve deputy,” Deputy Serg Palanov said Monday. “A reserve deputy is required to work two days a month. He usually works three days a week. And he doesn’t get paid for this. He has been doing this for probably 20-plus years.”
