Volunteers needed for February election

The Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters still needs more than 1,000 citizen volunteers to serve as election officers in the February 5 Presidential Primary Election. This is the first time that the Presidential Primary Election has been held this early and that has made recruiting election officers more challenging.

Election officers are needed throughout the county, especially the areas of Gilroy, Cupertino, Saratoga and Mountain View. There is also a critical need for more than 100 Spanish bilingual election officers.

Anyone who is registered to vote in the state of California can become an election officer. They are paid a stipend of $95 or more, and can also earn an extra stipend for bilingual skills. Bilingual election officers must be fluent in English and one of the following federally mandated languages: Spanish, Vietnamese, Chinese and Tagalog.

Experience is not necessary as training is provided.

High school students who would like to be involved in the election process can participate in the Student Election Officer Program. Students must be at least 16 years old with a minimum 2.5 grade point average, receive permission from their school and parents or guardians. Student election officers have the same responsibilities and receive the same stipends as other Election Officers.

New bus routes begin Monday

The biggest overhaul of the VTA in 20 years will go into effect Monday. Almost every one of the transit system’s bus routes are being changed with new schedules for more than 3,000 stops. The 15 most used lines will now have busses arriving every 15 minutes or less. Express routes will be added to downtown San Jose from Gilroy and the Fremont BART station.

Single Stream Recycling Program starts Monday

With single stream recycling, you will be able to mix all of your recyclables, such as cans, bottles, plastic, and paper/cardboard, into one container. A complete list of what can and cannot be put in the recycle cart is available online at www.southvalleydisposal.com. The new container has more capacity than both of the old recycling bins and has wheels which will be more convenient when bringing the cart curbside for pick up. Your old recycling bins can be reused as storage or other creative uses, or if you do not want to keep them, they will be collected on your recycle day the week of Jan. 21.

Single stream recycling will allow a greater amount of recyclable materials to be collected. This program will bring our city in line with current recycling trends since the processing facilities are set up to receive mixed recyclables and have the technology to separate the materials. Thank you for your continued commitment to our environment and for doing your part by recycling all the materials that you can.

Join the army of parents who volunteer for the 2008 GHS Grad Night. They need as many parents as possible to come to this week’s meeting so that they can move forward with plans for Grad Night. The more people who come will make less work for everyone and ensure a great night for all graduates. The meeting takes place at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, in the Gilroy High School library.
