Opening on school committee

San Jose – There is an opening for a South County representative on the Santa Clara County Committee on School District Organization. Candidates must be registered to vote and a resident of Gilroy’s supervisorial district. Interested candidates should submit an application including a résumé and a letter of intent. Learn to take photos like a pro

Gilroy – Want to learn how to make photographs look even better? Digital cameras are changing the face of photography, and this class will show the basic processes of downloading, color correcting, cropping, printing, archiving, e-mailing and much more.

The class will focus on Adobe PhotoShop basics, but the techniques can be applied to nearly all photo programs. No camera is needed to attend, but feel free to bring one. Class is taught by James M. Mohs, award-winning chief photographer for the Dispatch.

The class is open to ages 16 and older and will be held from 10am to noon Sept. 17 at the Gilroy Senior Center meeting room. Cost is $30 for Gilroy residents ($35 non-resident).

Caregivers meet Friday

Gilroy – Day Break Caregiver Support Group, a program of Catholic Charities, meets every third Friday of the month. Meetings are held in the Activity Room of Wheeler Manor, 651 W. 6th St., Gilroy, from 2 to 3:30pm.

Friday’s guest speaker will be Lisa Alvarez, an attorney specializing in Elder Law. The free meeting is open to the public.

Historical Society meeting and BBQ

Gilroy – The Historical Society hold their annual meeting an pot luck barbecue from noon to 3pm Saturday, Sept. 10, at Solis Winery, 3920 Hecker Pass Highway. Lunch of tri-tip will be served at a short business meeting.

The winery will provide atmosphere, shade, tables and chairs. Following the meeting, there will be opportunity for a tour of the winery and, of course, wine tasting.

Gilroy – All professional salon stylists and cosmetology students are invited to an evening of education at Gavilan College on Monday, Sept. 12 at 6:30pm.

The featured artists are Cherisse White, a renowned long hair updo specialist and Lisa Cadiente an extremely talented makeup artist. Together they will demonstrate the latest fashions and trends for the coming holiday season.
