I would suggest that the Gilroy downtown business owners, landlords, the Gilroy City Council, Gilroy City inspectors and those responsible for enforcing city codes take the train to downtown Morgan Hill (there is no need to travel to Pleasanton to find a nice downtown!!) and tour the area, meet with their counterparts in Morgan Hill and come back to Gilroy with a plan to fix up the area.
To turn the plan into reality, in our lifetimes, small business owner loans should be made and contractors hired to create the “look” desired for downtown … I suggest continuing the architectural feel already created near the train station, along with lamp posts, hanging baskets with flowers, planter boxes, evergreen and deciduous trees (heck, you can get free Redbuds from the Arbor Society). etc.
Business owner individuality with some restrictions – yes. Unfortunately restrictions are necessary, as is currently evident in downtown, can be displayed through their logos, signage, window displays, and doors, and not with bright blue paint, and “stump-and-dirt” sidewalk (thank you Doug Meier) landscaping.
The time and dollars spent would be rewarded!!
