While stepmothers are usually the villains of fairytales, it was a stepfather who was the bad guy last week in Gilroy, according to Gilroy Police.

Sergio Valdez, a 44-year-old Gilroy resident, was arguing with a woman with whom he has three children with when he allegedly pushed her down the stairs of her home on Farrell Avenue at Severance Street, threatening to kill her with a hand saw at 11:30 p.m. on March 17.

When her 21-year-old son – Valdez’ stepson – ran to her side to rescue her, police said that Valdez whipped out his hand saw and chased him down the street threatening to kill him, said Police Sgt. Pedro Espinoza.

Police received a call about the incident and arrested Valdez for domestic battery, assault with a deadly weapon and death threats. A protective order was also issued to keep Valdez away from his victims, Espinoza said.

Valdez was taken to Santa Clara County Jail.
