Morgan Hill – A burglary suspect shot in the arm by a Morgan Hill Police officer early Sunday morning is scheduled to be arraigned this afternoon on felony charges of burglary and auto theft.

Scott Campione, 42, of Modesto, will be arraigned at the Santa Clara County Superior Court facility in San Martin. He remains in county jail in lieu of $10,5000 bail. He also faces one misdemeanor count of possessing burglary tools.

Campione, an unemployed construction worker, was treated at Saint Louise Regional Hospital in Gilroy for a wound in his upper right arm and released to MHPD officers after the shooting that occurred about 2am. The bullet reportedly passed through Campione’s arm.

Police continue to release few details of the shooting and events leading up to it. The name of the officer who shot the suspect also has not been released.

The shooting was the first in at least 20 years involving a Morgan Hill police officer.

Police Lt. Joe Sampson said Tuesday no new information on the case would be released until Wednesday or Thursday.

“We hope to have some progress in our investigations that we can report at that time,” Sampson said.

The officer, who has been with the department for four years, arrived at Foothill Avenue near Maple Avenue east of the city after a report of possible burglars at the former Flying Lady restaurant and Hill Country golf course.

The officer stepped out of his car on the rural, two-lane road and saw a pickup with no headlights on coming toward him at a high rate of speed, Sampson said. The pickup reportedly stopped quickly in front of the officer, and Campione got out, but did not obey the officer’s command to surrender.

The officer then shot Campione.

The department, with the assistance of the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s office, is looking into whether the shooting was warranted.

As a part of the investigation into the burglary charge, detectives – assisted by Sheriff’s Office deputies – visited a home at 14115 Foothill Ave. about noon Sunday. The home is directly across the street from the golf course.

“We were looking for suspects, for any information that might assist in our investigations,” Sampson said.

No arrests were made, he said.

The golf course property is now owned by John Fry of Fry’s Electronics and several partners, under the name of Corralitos Creek LTD. The group built a world-class golf course over the former Hill Country course and has announced plans to move Fry’s American Institute of Mathematics, now in Palo Alto, into a reconstructed Flying Lady building or an entirely new building on the site.
