Police arrested a man who stabbed another man he did not know for no apparent reason Wednesday night, police said.
“This is distressing as there is no known motivation behind this attack,” according to a police statement. “The victim was tending to personal business when, for no reason whatsoever, he was thrust into a life and death situation.”
About 9 p.m., Christian Fuentes Colin, 21, attacked a man on the 600 block of East Seventh Street, giving the man multiple, but non-life-threatening wounds, police said. While Colin fled the scene of the crime, he was sighted and eventually arrested about 1 a.m. Thursday a few block away, police said.
The victim was treated at a local hospital, police said.
After the stabbing, Gilroy police Investigator Juan Rocha identified Colin as the suspect, though police did not say what linked him to the crime. Police also did not release details of the crime, including the name and age of the victim and the location and number of stab wounds. However, police did release that “the two men involved in this incident do not know each other and have never had contact with each other prior to the assault,” according to a police statement.
Police gave conflicting information about the arrest. In one version, Colin’s arrest came after officers investigated a report of a suspicious person “just blocks from the scene of the stabbing,” police said. Colin ran from the cops but was eventually captured and arrested. Police then released him, according to a statement.
In another version of events, police said that Colin was arrested “without incident” and that he was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail on charges of assault with a deadly weapon.
More information on this story, including clarifications of the events, will be posted Monday.
