Dear Editor,
The Quail Canyon Inn was recently damaged by fire. Many, many people far and wide are broken-hearted over this sad news.
The Quail was a beautiful old structure – the outside, with it’s wide covered porches on two sides and high-peaked roof; the inside was ancient knotty pine, walls and ceiling covered with dollar bills signed by previous customers from all over the world. The old wood bar was laminated with irreplaceable photographs of people, horses, cars and motorcycles from so many other eras. Most of these pictures had the Quail as a backdrop. Of course it’s a terrible shame to loose so much rustic charm. It’s gone forever. (I understand that the main structure could be, and should be, repaired.)
What is truly sad for a large group of local people is that they have lost a very special meeting place. The majority of the regular patrons are neighbors from Morgan Hill, San Martin, Gilroy and south San Jose. These are people that appreciate a quiet place to talk, have a beer and enjoy the view. Everyone knew your name …
Weekends were the times when motorcycle enthusiasts would stop in for a break from riding the scenic creek roads through oak covered hills or nearby redwood forests. Quail or not, riders will still be cruising this beautiful countryside. In other words, Officer Stan Devlin, the motorcycling community is not going away just because the Quail burned. Today’s bikers come from every walk of life. The Quail Canyon Inn should not be tagged as a “biker bar” just because it happens to sit in such an ideal location. All kinds of bikers stop in for a break, even the kind who peddle their Schwinns.
I hope the Quail Canyon Inn is rebuilt. If not, this part of California will loose just a little bit more of it’s original character, a rare thing to find these days.
