Measure E on the ballot is a city measure which would amend
Gilroy’s Charter to change the general municipal election
– primarily the election of city council members – from odd to
even numbered years. In so doing it extends the terms of Mayor Al
Pinheiro and all the sitting councilmembers by one year.
Measure E on the ballot is a city measure which would amend Gilroy’s Charter to change the general municipal election – primarily the election of city council members – from odd to even numbered years. In so doing it extends the terms of Mayor Al Pinheiro and all the sitting councilmembers by one year.
By changing the dates to be in line with even-year state and federal elections, the city will save money because Gilroy’s share of the costs related to the elections will decrease.
For that reason, and the fact that more people are likely to participate in municipal elections when those elections coincide with municipal elections, we recommend a yes vote.
Interestingly, the for and against arguments on the ballot feature all the current councilmembers lining up against one another. On the yes side are Mayor Al Pinheiro, Councilman Dion Bracco, Councilman Peter Arellano and Councilwoman Cat Tucker. Opposing are Councilman Perry Woodward, Councilman Bob Dillon and Councilman Craig Gartman.
Give the nod to greater participation, yes on E.
