Dear Editor,

I find both your July 8 editorial and the results of the unscientific poll about pit bulls very disturbing. The same bunch was whining for more laws a few years back when a mastiff killed someone in San Francisco. I took some flack when a couple of said whiners told me I should get rid of my mastiff. No paper will print my reply to them; however, here are a few points in response to your piece:

With the exception of genetic testing, it is impossible to objectively define a dog breed. Said testing would require several years research and would cost a fortune. So how will you determine what is a pit bull and what is not? What will the local badged fascists label each dog?

Dog ownership is a right, not a privilege. Dogs are private property. Get over it. People should be able to own any dog they want and train it however they want, including to provide necessary protection.

n If a dog in his own yard mauls another dog or other animal or person trespassing into said yard, that is the problem of the trespasser, not the dog.

Now I’m off to go buy a pit bull, just out of defiance of the control freaks.
