Dear Editor:

I would like to respond to and clarify some of the points you made in your editorial, “Don’t Shut Public Out On Wal-Mart.”

The purpose of EIR scoping meetings is to allow the public input in identifying environmental impacts, alternatives, and mitigation measures to be analyzed in the EIR, as well as to eliminate issues that are not significant.

Gilroy’s scoping meetings are informal, and designed so that the public may come to the meeting at any time during the meeting. City staff has held dozens of scoping meetings over the years, and we have found that early weekday evening hours are the best time – they allow people to stop by after work, provide their input, and then go home to their families.

In an effort to provide additional opportunities for public participation in the EIR process, the city has expanded the length of the scoping meeting.

The Wal-Mart EIR scoping meeting will be held on Tuesday, July 29, from 4 to 7 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at 7351 Rosanna Street.

The public may come in any time between 4 and 7 p.m. to discuss this project. The city will also provide an opportunity to discuss the Wal-Mart EIR during the July 31 Planning Commission meeting, which will be held in the City Council chambers at 6 p.m. In addition, the public may send written comments to my attention at City Hall by Aug.11.
