Morgan Hill police detectives have identified Eduardo L. Ortiz, 19, of Morgan Hill as a suspect in the May 12 stabbing of a 16-year-old male at the Village Avante Apartments basketball courts.

The Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office has issued a felony $100,000 warrant for his arrest on charges of assault with a deadly weapon and participation in a criminal street gang.

Ortiz is known to be a Sureño gang member, according to Morgan Hill police Special Operations Sgt. Jerry Neumayer.

A group of possibly gang-related suspects, thought to be in their teens or early 20s, were seen chasing people in the area the night of May 12, yelling gang slurs.

A 16-year-old male, who is not believed to be a gang member, according to police, was reportedly hit over the head with a bottle and stabbed twice in his lower torso. The suspects ran away in the direction of Del Monte Avenue, witnesses told police.

The victim was flown by helicopter to Valley Medical Center in San Jose for treatment and later released.

Neumayer said Ortiz may not have actually wielded the knife.

“He wasn’t identified as the stabber, but we believe that he was there, was one of the suspects, and he may have organized the attack,” Neumayer said.

Ortiz’s last known address is in Morgan Hill, Neumayer added, but he may have left town. Officers have attempted to serve the arrest warrant without success.

Anyone with information about the stabbing or Ortiz is asked to call Morgan Hill police at 779-2101.
