Lady Mustangs Drop Second Straight Game
Gilroy – The Gilroy boys soccer team knew coming into Saturday’s game at home against North Salinas that a victory would move them one step ,closer to their goal of an automatic CCS playoff berth. And for awhile it appeared that the weight of that pressure was a bit too much to bear. But in the end, the Mustangs shook off all depredation and kicked their way to a 2-0 victory, improving to 7-3 overall.
“We came out a little tight. I think the boys were feeling a little of the pressure because of the importance of the game and they came out a little hesitant and afraid,” said boys GHS soccer coach, Brian Hall.
After the slow start Hall gathered the troops at the break and emphasized the importance of the next 40 minutes.
The Mustangs were obviously listening.
“In the second half we were a different team. We controlled the pace,” Hall said. “In the first half we weren’t generating good attacking and scoring opportunities.
But 14 minutes into the second half Hall shook up the lineup with a roster move that changed all that.
“I took one of the defenders and brought him on top, so now we had three forwards,” Hall explained.
The move paid quick dividends as the Mustangs scored two minutes later when Jason Olivio pressured one defender forcing North Salinas to misplay the ball stole. Olivio then stole the ball and beat the goal keeper one on one.
Gilroy scored their second goal in the game’s final minute.
Gilroy Girls Drop
Second Straight
Last week at this time the Gilroy Lady Mustangs were flying high coming off their first-ever victory over arch rival Live Oak.
On Saturday the Lady Mustangs suffered their second straight loss, losing 3-0 to North Salinas.
But coach Jose Hernandez thinks the losing trend is behind them and now the team is back hungrier than ever.
“We were playing really, really sloppy,” said Hernandez. “If we had to lose our focus now was the time to do it. We had a great, very relaxed practice (Monday) and we’re ready to finish out the season strong and get ready for the playoffs.”
