Gilroy boys have solid performances, but come up short against
Vikings
Depth and balance were the key ingredients Thursday for Gilroy as it beat host North Salinas 76-60 in girls track in the Tri-County Athletic League.
For the Mustang boys, the result was almost identically opposite as the Vikings took a 75-61 decision. It was a loss that coach Jeff Myers found more positives in than negatives.
“The boys meet was good all the way around,” Myers said. “There were little snafus here and there. But overall I was pleased.”
Once again, Myers did some mixing and matching. But Peter Guenther was in his specialties, winning the 100 meters in 11.54 and the 300 intermediate hurdles in 44.94. He bumped into several hurdles in the 100 high hurdles and didn’t place.
Elsewhere, Sean Hale won the long jump in 18-5, Dante Fullard won the triple jump in 38-11 with Marshad Johnson second in 37-7 in his first competition, Lorenzo Dobson won the high jump in 5-8, Gerardo Rodriguez won the shot put in 40-9, Steven Heisey took second in both the 200 (24.04) and 400 (53.54), Derek Pesta was second in both the 1,600 (4:48) and 3,200 (10:24), Juan Velasquez was third in the 800 (2:08).
For the girls, sophomore Ariana Vera came up big with personal bests in the 100 and 200. Her 12.74 won the 100, and her 26.14 was second in the 200. Also, Vera ran a sizzling 1:01 leg on the winning 4 x 400 relay team (4:28.8).
Freshman Paty Hernandez and sophomore Kathleen Miller excelled in the distance races. Hernandez won the 1,600 in 5:37 and was second in the 2-mile in 12:33, behind Miller’s 12:32. Miller was second in the 800 in 2:44.
Megan McAvoy was a double winner, taking the triple jump in 32-0 and high jump at 5-0, and was third in long jump. Kimberly Johnson won the discus at 87-8 and was third in the shot put in 31-3. Sarah Unadia won the 100 meters, was second in the 300 hurdles (51.94) and third in the high jump (4-10). Also, Jaimie Silva was second in the 400 (1:09.4), Stephanie Glenn was second in the 100 hurdles, third in the 300 hurdles and tied for first in the pole vault. Tylaisha Friend was second in the triple jump in 31-2.
“Overall, mostly we had two scoring and they had one,” Myers said of the girls meet. “Our depth and team balance made a difference.”
The Mustang boys and girls are in action at 3:30pm next Thursday when they host Palma and Notre Dame.
