SALINAS – Effort wasn’t a question Wednesday night, but getting the desired result was elusive for Gilroy High’s girls basketball team.

The Mustangs lost 59-54 at North Salinas, falling to 3-2 in the Tri-County Athletic League.

After trailing 32-24 at halftime, Gilroy (11-8) mounted a comeback to pull within one, 43-42, entering the fourth quarter.

“Honestly, it was a three-point ballgame the whole fourth quarter, going back and forth,” Mustangs coach Susan Shapiro said.

But a judgment call by a referee with just over a minute remaining provided the Vikings enough room to seal the game. Attempting to stop the clock with a foul, Gilroy’s Sovi Nou was called for an intentional foul, giving North Salinas two shots and the ball back. Nou, who scored 12 points in the game, was forced out of the contest with the foul as it was her fifth personal.

Foul trouble kept GHS frontcourt players Lindsey Foster and Laura Steele from playing much of the second quarter, which allowed the Viking’s Bina Abbot to dominate the key with 17 points and 14 rebounds. Edthel Lugo was also a problem for Gilroy on the perimeter, scoring a game-high 22 points.

Steele ended the game with four points and 10 rebounds, while Chelsea Hill had 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Mustangs.

Barely losing to a 13-3 North Salinas squad (3-1 TCAL) wasn’t exactly a heartbreaker, Shapiro said.

“I’m proud of the girls, without a doubt,” she said. “They played a good enough game to win but just couldn’t close the deal.

“If the ultimate goal is for us to get better for next year, we’re well on our way because we’re getting better each game.”

The Mustangs will host Notre Dame in their next contest at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
