Salinas – Gilroy’s girls tennis team swatted aside a TCAL foe on Thursday, defeating Alvarez High School 5-2 in Salinas.

The Mustangs took two out of four singles matches, with the one defeat coming by tiebreaker, and held serve in doubles matches by winning all three pairings.

“It was a very good day,” coach Jami Reynolds said. “They were very confident and they had a game plan and they executed it very well,”

Mischelle Tajan defeated Alvarez’ No. 1 player Susie Nagoi 6-2, 7-6, continuing a solid start to her Gilroy career and GHS’ No. 2 singles player, Amy Huang, dominated her match against Sharlene Spear 6-0, 6-1.

The two singles defeats came in very close matches as No. 4 Mustang player Gories Kwong lost to Christina Wong 6-3, 6-4 and No. 3 Emily Castro suffered another tiebreaker loss 4-6, 7-6 (7-10). It was her third defeat by tiebreaker this season.

No. 1 doubles partners Holly Hunter and Karissa Tellez won their match 6-4, 6-2, the No. 2 pairing of Natalie Toews and Kimberly Johnson took their match 6-1, 6-4 and No. 3 partners Anneliese Zelina and Melanie Morelos won 6-1, 6-3.

“The doubles had the game plan of staying in the point, hitting down the middle and not making as many errors,” Reynolds said. “They were really focused today and they served very well. The No. 3 doubles performed consistently (and No. 2 singles player) Amy Huang really showed her potential, her ability and talent.”

The coach went on to say the team is starting to hit its stride and has worked out some of the early season kinks. The Mustangs’ next matches will be Thursday in Gilroy against Notre Dame at 4pm.
