The Mustangs had no trouble hitting the ball against defending Central Coast Section Division III champion Carmel. The problem was, the Padres hit the ball better and farther at their cozy field.

Chris Moon had two of Carmel’s four home runs and the Padres outscored Gilroy 22-11 in a game called after six innings because of darkness. That wiped out six runs that GHS scored in the top of the seventh. The game was called with Lukas Fortino at bat, the bases loaded and two out.

“We have yet to play a full game,” GHS coach Clint Wheeler said. “This team is like a Jekyll and Hyde. Sometimes it seems like we don’t show up ready to play.”

In this case, there might have been a reason. The Mustangs (2-3) were scheduled to play at Mountain View. The Spartans’ field was unplayable. Meanwhile, Carmel was scheduled to face Monte Vista Christian. MVC had no transportation available.

Gilroy did have transportation, so instead of heading north the Mustangs went south. Thus, a game GHS was scheduled to play Friday was moved up two days. And Mountain View will visit Gilroy at 3pm Friday.

And GHS got off to a quick start with three runs in the first inning. Only Carmel (4-1) was a lot quicker with 10 first-inning runs that had the Mustangs playing from behind for the rest of the game.

“I know we have a tough schedule, but I thought our guys would be able to change gears,” Wheeler said.

Jacob Dexter (two doubles) and Matt Hemeon each collected four hits for Gilroy. Charlie Duffy and Kevin Grove had two hits apiece. Roberto Celestino, Duffy and Dexter each scored three runs. Michael Stevens was on base four times.

“I told the guys that if you get the ball up (in the air) it would go out,” Wheeler said. “They did. We didn’t.”
