Gilroy – The bitter cold didn’t seem to bother Gilroy.
The Mustangs’ passing was as crisp as the night air Thursday and the defense allowed Notre Dame few good shots as GHS took a 2-1 Tri-County Athletic League at Garcia-Elder Complex.
“I was happy with our passing and our movement,” GHS coach Jose Hernandez said. “We got a little weak with our defensive tackling in the second half. But overall, we played well.”
Freshman Ariana Carrillo got the Mustangs (5-4-2 overall, 2-0-1 TCAL) on the scoreboard 14 minutes into the game with her first goal of the season.
Kristi Figueroa dumped a pass inside to Carrillo. The Notre Dame goalie came out and Carrillo looped a shot over her head which found the net. It was the only score of the first half.
Gilroy took a 2-0 lead midway through the second half when Amanda Bruce scored unassisted. The Mustangs were on the attack when Bruce got loose in the middle of the field to get a ball and beat the keeper.
The Spirits (6-3-2, 1-2), who had allowed just nine goals in their previous 10 games, got on the scoreboard with five minutes left.
Notre Dame was able to make several attacks, but Nubia Diaz de Leon and Cheyenne Strametz led a defense that kept the Spirits from getting good looks at the goal.
“We made a few mental errors and there was a little miscommunication, but overall I was happy with the effort,” Hernandez said.
The Mustangs travel Tuesday to North Salinas to take on the defending TCAL champions. The Vikings (3-1 in TCAL) lost 3-1 Thursday to San Benito.
