VARISTY GIRLS
SEASIDE – Gilroy High’s girls basketball team has used the first three rounds of the Seaside Sweet 16 tournament to avenge a heartbreaking loss and also gain plenty of experience.
The result has been an ecstatic court-side general. “The girls are playing absolutely amazing basketball,” Gilroy coach Susan Shapiro said.
Going 2-1 in three games since Friday, the Mustangs (7-5) will now face the winner of Monday’s contest between Soquel and Leland for fifth place in the tourney. Tip-off is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. today.
Losing in double overtime to Aptos in the Gilroy-hosted Mustang Classic earlier this season, GHS got revenge by winning 49-41 over the Mariners on Friday.
Chelsea Hill posted 13 points and 12 rebounds, and was aided by the recent addition of forward Lauren Rhodes, who has been unable to play to begin the season. Rhodes had nine points and seven rebounds.
Guard Sovi Nou (eight points, five rebounds and two steals) played a critical role on defense, limiting the production of Aptos’ Lindsey Sotomayor, who torched the Mustangs in their first meeting with 21 points.
“If I had a ball of the game I would have given it to Sovi,” Shapiro said.
Nou’s responsibility was to shut down Sotomayor, as the Mustangs employed a box-and-one defense.
Gilroy lost its next game to Lincoln of San Francisco, 70-60, but the defeat did have a silver lining. Shapiro noted that Lincoln (10-2) has 11 seniors, and hasn’t had too many close games. Hill and Nou both had 17 points, and Laura Steele contributed 10 points to go with 13 rebounds.
Facing Gig Harbor (Washington) on Monday, Gilroy rebounded with a 54-43 win that once again featured an outstanding performance by Hill, who finished with 23 points and 14 rebounds.
“Honestly, I don’t know what else to say about Hill,” Shapiro said, noting that Nou (13 points) and Steele (nine points, 13 rebounds) also continued to play well.
VARSITY BOYS
MORGAN HILL – After taking down Anzar with ease, 77-21, in the first round of the Sobrato boys basketball tournament, Gilroy High lost a close contest to the host school 63-56 Monday night.
The Mustangs’ leading scorer in defeat was Elijah Harrell with 14 points to go with four assists. Forwards Michael Aldridge had 12 points and Taylor Hartman pitched in nine points and six rebounds.
Gilroy plays today at 3:30 p.m. for third place.
A full recap of the tournament will be posted later this week.
