Gilroy High’s boys volleyball team cruised to victory over the visiting Palma Chieftains Thursday, winning all three games: 25-14, 25-19, 25-10.
The victory was expected, as Gilroy entered having won its last three matches while Palma is trying to rebuild its program and has yet win a match this season (0-10).
Gilroy coach Sue Grogan said she was happy with the effort put forth considering her players knew they were favored to win.
“I’m trying to get my guys to take each game as serious as the next one so that when we see Seaside and Monterey, we’ll be ready,” Grogan said.
Kevin Bruce led the Mustangs with 12 kills. Several slams came from overpasses, in which Palma misplayed the ball over the net at inopportune times.
Gilroy had nine aces as a team, with Alfee Medenceles leading the way with two. For the game he had 17 service points.
Gilroy’s coach said the main goal right now is to improve over the course of the season while keeping pace with the Tri-County Athletic League leaders.
“I just want them to keep it as competitive as possible,” Grogan said. “That’s one of the downfalls of volleyball, is a lot of teams – good, bad or otherwise – you tend to play down to your opponent. And as a coach you try to help them overcome that.”
The Mustangs (11-8, 4-2 TCAL) will next play Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Salinas.
