Mustangs Roll Over North Salinas

Gilroy pins 54-21 defeat on Vikings
Gilroy – Even with three Gilroy starters out of the lineup Wednesday, North Salinas was no match for the Mustangs.

Every Gilroy wrestler but Andres Barragan moved up in weight, but the Mustangs cruised past the Vikings 54-21 in a Tri-County Athletic League match at the GHS auxiliary gym.

“I thought we wrestled well,” said Ethan Ogle, who registered a pin at 171. “We could have done better, but we’re all working hard at practice to get better. We take every match serious.”

Hunter Collins, Austin Gubrud and Jesse Rogers were all out of the lineup. In addition to Ogle, Rudy Maldonado and Travis Sakamoto got pins for the Mustangs.

Rodney Balajadia, a recent addition to the varsity, got things started for Gilroy after the Mustangs forfeited at 103 and Jesse Delgado got the points back by winning by forfeit at 112.

Balajadia was in total control at 119, riding Chris Halcon throughout the match and posting a 10-1 win. After Maldonado used a figure-4 to the head for a pin in 1:34, Vincent Aboytes also got a nine-point decision over Francisco Nunez.

Other than Barragan’s 18-6 win over Frankie Martinez, Gilroy got its other points by forfeits.

North Salinas got 12 points by forfeits as well.

Gilroy is in action this weekend at the Five Counties meet in Los Angeles.

“It’s a tough tournament,” Ogle said. “We need to keep working the rest of the week to get ready. Those type of tournaments are great because it’s against tough competition and gets us more experience. I enjoy a challenge every match.”
