Salinas – There was a lot of speed exhibited in the boys 200 yard freestyle relay Saturday at the Tri-County Athletic League championships at Alvarez High.

While San Benito won the race by nearly three seconds, the next three finishers – including Gilroy – all had Central Coast Section qualifying marks in one of the most impressive displays on the day.

Gilroy’s team of sophomore David Pribyl, senior Aaron Moon, freshman Edward Malick and junior Daniel Shields sped through the water in a time of 1:36.71, beating the CCS qualifying time of 1:37.19.

They’ll now have a chance to improve on that time when they compete in the CCS preliminaries Friday at Stanford. The competition begins at 11am and the top swimmers advance to the finals beginning at 1pm Saturday.

That race highlighted a day in which the Mustangs took fourth as a team in both the girls and boys competition.

The girls finished with 247 points, placing them behind Salinas (567), San Benito (524) and Notre Dame (302). The boys had 257 points, placing them behind champion San Benito (560), as well as Salinas (403) and Palma (376).

Malick and Shields added to their CCS time on the relay team by both earning a pair of top-three finishes. Malick took second in the 500 free at 5:15.04 and third in the 200 IM at 2:14.01. Shields placed second in the 50 free at 23.25 and was third in the 100 free at 52.23.

Pribyl took third in the 100 yard butterfly – an event in which he had already qualified for CCS – with a time of 57.51.

The boys and girls 200 medley relay teams both placed third, with the girls finishing in 2:08.23 and boys touching the wall in 1:50.95 – less than a second shy of the CCS time of 1:49.99.

Maegan Collett swam the 100 butterfly in 1:05.54 to take third. She had previously eclipsed the CCS mark of 1:04.91 and will compete in that event Friday. She also took third in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:07.57.

Jenny Ailes was third while finishing the 50 free in 27.65. Melissa Davis took third in the 500 free, touching the wall in 5:53.25 and the 200 freestyle relay also place third, finishing in 1:51.93.
