Gilroy – The Mustangs let the Vikings back into the game in the second half before Kelly Perkins’ second goal of the contest put North Salinas away in a 3-1 road victory for the GHS field hockey team Thursday afternoon.

Midfielder Karlie Sandoval earned Player of the Game honors, assisting with Erin Magill on two goals, including the final one and a short-corner by Heather Link to make it 1-0 at halftime.

Gilroy quickly went up 2-0 in the first minutes of the second half on Perkins’ first goal, assisted by Rushelle Preeshl and freshman Laura Spellman.

“It got a little scary when they pulled to 2-1 in the second half,” said Gilroy co-head coach Adam Gemar, whose team had 18 shots on goal to 10 for North Salinas.

“But we outplayed them with our skill, stickwork and set plays we’ve been working on,” he added.
