I knew opening up the new nickname contest to all of you was a
good idea.
The response in the first two days of deciding a nickname for
Gilroy High football, on top of simply being called the Mustangs,
has been excellent.

The response in the first two days of deciding a nickname for Gilroy High football, on top of simply being called the Mustangs, has been excellent.

While some readers failed to get into the spirit — submitting nicknames such as: None, none of the above, lucky, overrated, and How is this sports news? – the majority of you used your imagination for a team that is 6-0 and averaging victories by a margin of 37.6 points per game.

My personal favorites were The Blue”bonic” Plague and Point a Minute. And then there was one very simple, direct proposal: Awesome.

Taking the most submitted answer, which had an overwhelming amount of backing compared to the rest of the “other” answers, and combining it with the three I originally proposed, a new web poll is now available.

The three original nicknames and corresponding percent of the vote received were: The Blues Brothers – 20%, Garlic City Guards – 18%, and Mustangs of War – 26%.

The nickname readers wanted most was Blue Bosses. Similar to The Blues Brothers, the nickname plays off of Gilroy’s most prominent school color.

I actually like Blue Bosses a lot, but as I wrote a couple days ago, the nickname shouldn’t be up to me. It should be up to all of you.

A nickname hangs in the balance. Choose wisely.

Here are some of the other nominees that didn’t quite make it:

Mollywop

Mollywoppers

Code Blue (Note: The defense is already referring to itself as The Code, but that seems more like an attitude than a nickname to me. The defensive line is calling itself The Dogs of War.)

Blue Thunder

Blue Ice

Blue Force

The Blue Stampede

Big Blue

Bruise Brothers

Garlic Kings

Garlic Crushers

Roasted Garlic Cloves

Hammond’s Heroes

The Peabodies

The Aggies

Kings of Crunk

The Destroyers

The G-Squad

Charging Mustangs

The Mustang Stampede

Mustangs
