Ann Roessel November 23, 1913 – July 11, 2012
Our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother Ann Roessel passed away peacefully in her sleep at Tulare Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Tulare, California, on July 11, 2012, at age 98. She was born November 23, 1913 in Dordrecht, the Netherlands to Jacques and Kato Duits. Ann, her husband Paul, and daughter Tanja immigrated to the U.S. in 1954. Ann was a Registered Nurse in the Netherlands and a homemaker and library clerk in Morgan Hill, California, where she lived from 1954-1983. She lived in Visalia, California since 1983. She leaves behind her daughter Tanja Wood and son-in-law Bob Wood, of Rodeo, New Mexico, and her grandchildren Saskia Mizushima of Redmond, Washington, and Derek Plessman of Seattle, Washington. Also her grandson-in-law Neal Mizushima, and great-grandsons Quinn and Lev Mizushima. She was preceded in death by her loving husband Paul Roessel, her brother Jacob Duits, and her sister Louisa Meerloo.
John Francis Soares October 21, 1919 – July 13, 2012
Beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, teacher and friend died peacefully at home after a brief illness. John was born in Santa Clara CA, to Anna and Frank Soares. He graduated from Santa Clara High School in 1938 and San Jose State in 1947. He served honorably as a Sergeant in the US Army during WWII, during which time he met and married his wife of 68 years, Madge Walske Soares. They settled in Morgan Hill in 1948 and raised a family of 5 children.John was a much loved and respected art teacher at Live Oak High School from 1948 until his retirement in 1982. He was very active in RCIA at his church, St. Catherine’s, and in the Morgan Hill Historical Society. He was an avid reader, a story teller, a gourmet, a lover of art and music and a wise and considerate man. His absence is keenly felt by all who knew, and loved him. Surviving him are his wife, Madge, his children Gina (Bill Jones) and Todd; son-in-law Daniel Sigler, his grandchildren Mak Knutson (Amy), Luke Knutson (Nowelle), Megan Jones-Curran (Terry), and Elizabeth Jones. Also 3 great-grandchildren: Aria, Blue, and Charlie Anna Knutson, and numerous nephews and nieces. He is rejoining his children Margo Sigler, John-Scott Soares, and Matthew Soares.
$12,000 raised for violin program
As news spread regarding the financial jeopardy of a cherished violin program at Antonio Del Buono Elementary School, Gilroyans answered the call in full force – raising $7,000 of the needed $17,000 during a special fundraiser Friday.
Fire engine collides into car on Church Street
At 1 p.m. on Friday, July 13, the driver of a Gilroy Fire engine collided with a white Oldsmobile on Church and Fourth streets, causing injury to himself and the passenger of the Oldsmobile.

New gymnastics location in Morgan Hill
California Sports Center (CSC) celebrates its 25th anniversary with the grand opening of a new gymnastics facility in Morgan Hill, its seventh facility in San Clara County. The facility 16959 Monterey Road in Morgan Hill, will be completely renovated and equipped with all new state-of-the-art equipment. The 6,000 square foot gym will be home to both boys and girls ages from 18 months to 18 years old. CSC will provide preschool, recreational and team classes for the children and families in Morgan Hill and surrounding areas. The programs will teach how to perform level appropriate routines, just like a competitive gymnast where students enjoy a “Gold Medal Day” graduation every eight weeks where they earn the opportunity to demonstrate what they have learned in front of a live audience of friends, family and staff.
The Barn at Hoey Ranch grand opening
On June 21, the Gilroy Chamber of Commerce helped celebrate the opening of The Barn at Hoey Ranch with owners, Jim and Debbie Hoey. Known to rise before daylight and travel to remote parts of the state, the Hoey’s have stocked their barn with unique and one-of-a-kind indoor and outdoor treasures they have discovered on their trips.
