Your Views: Inspired to Write
I just wanted to let you know that I was moved by reading David Lima's article “Is Gilroy's ‘small town’ doomed?” in the July 31 Dispatch—so much so that I just wrote a letter via the city's website to the council members, and thought I would let you know. I appreciated Mr. Lima's information and insight and thank you all that it inspired me to take action and write to my council members. That letter follows:
Prep Sports: Gilroy High stadium on track for Sept. 25 opening

So, who’s supposed to be cleaning our streets?
What exactly is the job of the city street sweeper? Is it not to clean the gutters of our city streets? If I am correct in this assumption, I am wondering why the gutters are not clean after the sweeper has gone by, in particular, on Mantelli Drive, all the way up to the Country Estates as well as the side streets off of Mantelli. I heard the sweeper go by this morning, but as I drove away and down on Mantelli it was clear that everything was just as dirty as yesterday, and the week before that, and the month before that. This includes the storm drain grates that are full of debris. There are also huge weeds growing in the cracks on the gutters on Mantelli west of Country Drive. Whose responsibility is it to maintain the cleanliness of this road? This is a huge walking path for many residents of Gilroy and it is a complete eyesore.

Between Us: When kids grow up
The last time I wrote a column for a newspaper, I was a mere 38 years old. My daughter, The Girl, hadn’t graduated high school yet, and my son, The Boy, wasn’t even a twinkle in the metaphoric eye of Gilroy’s South Valley Middle School.

City OKs advocates’ access to Red Barn with conditions

Glue traps are inhumane killers
GOTCHA! That’s what the hungry young California kingsnake was likely thinking as he struck at the field mouse sitting in a shiny tray. But it was a double-gotcha. Both critters became immobilized victims of that device of torture ... the glue trap. Despite the manufacturers’ assertions that the traps are a “humane” way to rid homes and yards of pests, the homeowner was horrified by the sight of the struggling 35-inch long snake and the truffle-sized mouse and brought them, still stuck in the glue, to the Wildlife Education and Rehabilitation Center.
