GILROY—Rakesh Chand and his family lamented many times about the lack of an Indian food restaurant in Gilroy. Tired of making the trek to San Jose or Fremont to enjoy a plate of authentic Indian fare, the Chands made history and opened the Garlic City’s first and only Indian restaurant, Spice ‘N Ice Bar and Grill on Fifth Street.
Police blotter: July 14 to 21
The Gilroy Police Department made arrests for a variety of crimes between July 14 and 21, including assault with a deadly weapon, rape, driving under the influence and child endangerment. Arrests were recorded in the GPD blotter during that period and compiled from public records.
Gilroy Elks Night at SJ Giants game
Join the Gilroy Elks at the San Jose Giants game Friday, July 31 and stick around for the post-game fireworks show. The Elks chose the singers to perform "God Bless America" and "Take Me Out To The Ballgame," and a very special Elk will throw out the first pitch. City hall exhibit features young artist
Artwork by 6-year-old South Bay artist Thanmay Sarath will be on display at Gilroy City Hall, 7351 Rosanna St., through Aug. 28, the fifth solo exhibition of his young career. Thanmay started working with crayons when he was 9 months old and moved on to acrylic, oil and pastel.

Texas Cabin restoration celebrated with ribbon-cutting
Gilroy Yamato Hot Springs celebrated the restoration and dedication of the newly restored Texas Cabin with a ribbon-cutting ceremony July 18.The Texas Cabin was built in the early 1920s utilizing elements from an earlier building on the same site. Built during the period in which Gilroy Hot Springs was owned and operated by the William J. McDonald family, the cabin provided four separate accommodations with two bathrooms. Later it housed Japanese families recovering from their time in internments camps during World War II.The Texas Cabin is one of the largest remaining cabins at Gilroy Yamato Hot Springs. The restoration was jointly funded by California State Parks and private donations with work completed by Southwest Construction and overseen by state parks staff.Gilroy Yamato Hot Springs can be toured by reservation only by calling (408) 314-7185 or e-mailing [email protected].
